States should prepare a data bank of all major industries which use hazardous chemicals within their jurisdiction in order to reduce the risk in the event of accidents, a senior disaster management official said.
"About 1,800 industries using hazardous chemicals were spread across various states in the country. These industries were using inflammable, explosive and toxic chemicals which, when released into the atmosphere, pose risk to human life and property," Rakesh Dubey, Director of Disaster Management Institute, Bhopal, said here.
He was here to participate in a day-long national conference on 'Process Safety Management'.
The information about chemicals with antidotes and preparedness can reduce the risk. The states and Union Territories should prepare the data bank of all the industries using hazardous chemicals, as per the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) of schedule of MS&IHC Rules, he said.
Being a densely populated country, integrated norms should be notified for risk management by appropriate land use control, which is one of the best management practises for risk reduction and risk termination.
