The Oscar-nominated director, best known for his thrillers such as "Se7en", "Fight Club", "The Social Network" and "Gone Girl", was in the running to direct "The Force Awakens", which was ultimately helmed by JJ Abrams.
Fincher says he spoke with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy about the job at that time.
"I can't imagine the kind of intestinal fortitude one has to have following up the success of these last two," he told Empire in an interview.
"Star Wars" has not been an easy assignment for many directors. "Episode IX" director Colin Trevorrow stepped down from the film in September amid creative differences with Lucasfilm, leaving Abrams to take over.
Earlier this year, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired from the "Han Solo" movie with Ron Howard stepping into at the last minute.
