"The Principal Secretary (Home) has directed that the tendency of exhibiting fire arms or celebratory firing during marriages, birthdays, victory processions or at public places should be checked strictly," Secretary (Home) Deepak Kumar told reporters here.

He said directives had been issued to all District Magistrates, DIGs and SPs in this regard.

In case of violation, necessary action for cancellation of the licence would be taken, Kumar said.

Concerned over the "brazen display and misuse of arms" in public places and during celebrations, the Allahabad High Court had yesterday restrained the arms license holders of Uttar Pradesh from using their weapons for celebratory firing.

It also directed the Principal Secretary (Home) and the Director General of Police (DGP) to appear before the court on May 3 and apprise it about the stand of the state government with regard to celebratory firing incidents reported in last one year and action taken under the Arms Act.
