Dayalu Ammal, wife of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, today recorded her statement as a prosecution witness before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) in the 2G spectrum case at her residence here.
Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi, MP, Managing Director of Kalaignar TV Sharad Kumar and Director of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd Asif Balwa, who are among the accused, appeared before CMM M Gopalan at the time of recording of Dayalu Ammal's statement.
The CMM, who has been appointed as Commissioner by the Special Court, recorded the statements of the 85-year old Dayalu Ammal at her Gopalapuram residence in a process that lasted about five hours.
Senior public prosecutor for CBI K K Goel, responding to queries from waiting reporters, said : "All evidence has been recorded in the case. Court is seized of the matter. Dayalu Ammal was cooperative," he said.
He, however, refused to elaborate on the contents of the deposition by Karunanidhi's wife, who was exempted by the Supreme Court from personal appearance before the special CBI court in Delhi trying the multi-crore 2G spectrum case and allowed to record her statement at her residence on health grounds.
Of the 17 accused in the case, twelve had been exempted from appearance before the CMM today. While three, including Kanimozhi, were present, two others were represented by their counsel.
Tight security arrangements were made by police to ensure a trouble-free recording of the statement in the case in which former telecom minister and DMK MP A Raja is the prime accused.
Dayalu Ammal's son and DMK Treasurer M K Stalin, former union ministers Dayanidhi Maran, grandnephew of Karunanidhi, and S S Palanimanickam visited the house while a host of DMK legal wing cadres gathered outside.
