Talking to PTI, Doordarshan's Director General Tripurari Sharan said that as per the existing policy on U-rated films were shown but added that in the case of U/A rated 'I Am' there was indeed a rethink going on.

"As per the DD guidelines of 2007, films which are certified as U/A cannot be telecast. But other private channels are showing these films in late night slots, so why can't we?" Sharan asked.

"But all I can say at this moment is that that the thinking about the rethinking on these guidelines has begun," he said.

According to Sharan, the case of 'I Am' was being considered as it had won a national award and Doordarshan gives priority to showing such films.

'I Am' won the 'Best Hindi film' at the 58th National film awards but was awarded a U/A certificate by the censor board. Director Onir had then reportedly expressed disappointment that the film was not eligible for screening on Doordarshan.

Sharan said he had spoken to Onir and asked him to submit his film following which possibilities for its telecast would be explored.

The movie, starring Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala, Nandita Das, Rahul Bose and Sanjay Suri, explores the complex themes of loss of identity, gay rights, single motherhood while narrating the lives of four characters.
