"We are unable to find good teachers to teach science in our institutions. If we need 40,000 teacher, we can hardly manage with 15,000," Chatterjee said at the launch of a Eduventure of Genesis Group here in the city.
On the state's "lacklustre" show at the national-level competitive exams for past several years, Chatterjee said its not that the state lacked merit but it happened because of the absence of proper training.
"I do not agree that Bengalis are not doing good at competitive examinations at the national level... There are several IAS officers who are Bengalis but they are not from Bengal," Chatterjee said.
Comparing the country's education system with that of foreign countries, Chatterjee said there was a huge gap and there were lots of work to be done to improve the education sector.
"I have noticed that in abroad, their study materials are very good and then the way of they teach in schools is simply brilliant... There is a huge difference between our education system and there are lots to be done to improve it," Chatterjee added.
