Deaths on Central Railway outnumber those on Western Railway

The reply has revealed that commuter deaths on Central Railway is four times that on Western Railway for the period between 2009 and 2011.

The Central Railway has informed an RTI activist and former BJP national council member Om Prakash Sharma that during the period from 2009 to 2011, a total of 9,661 commuters died in railway accidents.

The Western railway stated in its reply that during the same period, a total of 1,853 commuters died, which means that 7,808 more commuters died on the Central Railway.

The Central Railway replied that during the same period a total of 10,984 people were injured, while on the Western Railway, that number was 4,325.

He pointed out that official figures released by the Railways indicated that deaths on Central Railway was 420 per cent more than the Western Railway, though the passenger load on both were the same.

Sharma expressed serious concern over large scale commuter deaths and said that the Railways must take these deaths seriously and act fast to avoid these. He said that family members of those who die in accidents should be given employment in the Railways.
