A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his residence in Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan, police said today.
Vishnudutt Vishnoi, aged around 30 years, hanged himself on Thursday night. His family members came to know about the incident yesterday morning and informed the police, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI), Rawla Police Station, Ranvir Singh said.
He said the body was handed over to family members after a postmortem examination yesterday.
Vishnoi's brother said he was debt-ridden and committed suicide under this pressure. The matter was being probed, Singh said.
Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president Sachin Pilot condoled the farmer's death and held the state government responsible for the suicide.
He said that after protests by farmers, the government hd formed a committee but has not yet waived their loans.
Pilot said the opposition Congress party recently staged a 'dharna' in the assembly on the issues but the government remained silent.
