The CBI has booked the project manager of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India and his deputy for allegedly allowing supply of sub-standard ballast which resulted in the "loss of crores of rupees" to the government.
The agency booked Project Manager Shiv Karan, Deputy Project Manager V K Mittal of DFCCI, Sikar, D K Choudhary, former project manager (now a Larsen and Toubro representative), Project Manager Lalji Verma and engineer Mohit Sharma, Chevron Minerals, Balaji Mineral, Bajrang stone crusher and others, according to an FIR filed by the agency.
The accused have been booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating, and under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, it said.
DFCCI is a special purpose vehicle set up under the railways ministry to undertake planning and development, construction, maintenance and operation of dedicated freight corridors. It was incorporated in October 2006 under the Indian Companies Act 1956.
Upon getting information about the supply of sub-standard ballast, the CBI had carried out a surprise check in August last year at three places Maunda, Bhagega and Kachera in Sikar district of Rajasthan.
All the samples were collected from the stacks approved by the Project Management Consultancy Services at these locations, the FIR said.

The agency alleged that the sample taken during the surprise checks failed to meet the specifications.
It alleged that Shiv Karan and Mittal abused their official positions with mala-fide intention and entered in criminal conspiracy with L&T representative Choudhary, Project Manager Lalji Verma, engineer Mohit Sharma and other accused.
It said they allegedly entered in the conspiracy for the purpose of cheating between 2014 and 2016 in the supply of sub-standard ballast resulting in "wrogful loss of crores of rupees to the Government of India and corresponding wrongful gain to the accused either jointly or individually".
