Delegation meets Andhra men held in Dubai jail

While visiting Dubai's Al Aweer Central Jail yesterday, they met 13 detainees from Andhra, President of the Council P Narayana Swami said, adding, when the agreement is implemented, the prisoners will have a choice to spend their remaining prison term in India.

Swami was accompanied by social worker Uma Rani Padmanabhan and an advocate during the visit that was arranged by officials of Indian Consulate in Dubai, a statement from the Council said.

Swami also urged the Indian government as well as the Andhra state government to provide legal aid to all Indian prisoners in Arab Gulf countries.

According to the statement, Swami requested both the governments to implement the India-UAE agreement for transfer of sentenced persons.

"The bilateral agreement was signed by the two countries on 23rd November 2011. The deal will help about 1,200 Indian prisoners who have been languishing in UAE prisons. As per the agreement, Indian prisoners in the UAE jails, those who have been sentenced will have a choice to spend the remaining prison term in India," the statement said.
