A delegation of women leaders of Delhi Congress, led by its president Ajay Maken, today met Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to register their protest against the alleged manhandling of the party's women workers by Delhi Police personnel during a candle march on May 7.
While apprising Jung about the incident, DPCC women workers alleged that they had been lathicharged and dragged by their hands and hair by Delhi Police personnel even though they were only carrying out a "peaceful" candle march at India Gate here to protest the Moga molestation incident.
"This kind of behaviour of police is not acceptable in a civilised society. As many as 14 workers got injured to the extent that they got their legs and hands fractured," said Maken, who showed photographs of the "police atrocities" to the LG and demanded appropriate action against the erring police officials.
A group of doctors of a North MCD hospital, who claimed that they had not been paid salaries for last several months, had also accompanied Maken.
"They will be forced to go on strike on May 15 and 16 if their salaries are not released. Maken said that if, the doctors and para medical staff would go on strike, lakhs of poor people would be deprived of essential medical services in Delhi. Maken appealed to the LG to interfere in the matter so that these people do not go on stike," a statement by Delhi Congress said.
DPCC chief spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee and former Delhi minister Kiran Walia had also accompanied Maken.
"The LG assured the delegation for necessary action against the erring police officers after a thorough enquiry of the India Gate incident. The LG also assured the delegation of the doctors and para medical staff of North MCD Hospitals to get resolved the issue," the statement said.
