Delhi BJP today urged the Centre to get the 237 cases related to 1984 anti-Sikh riots reinvestigated and make immediate payment of due compensation to the victims.
Party leaders have also welcomed the enhancement of compensation for anti-Sikh riot victims from Rs 3 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP MLA and party national secretary R P Singh said, "Sikh community has been demanding since long that special investigation should be instituted in those 237 cases which were pointed out in the report of Justice Nanawati Committee for having been suppressed and later on closed by the Delhi Police without being referred to any Court."
Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay and Singh said that various Governments announced compensation of 770 crore rupees for the victims of 1984 anti Sikh riots through their decisions but payment of compensation of about 182 crore rupees is still pending due to which the riot victim's families are aggrieved.
"Police had registered a case against a Congress leader and others which was withdrawn later in 1991 under political pressure as Congress again came back to power," Singh said in THE letter.
Earlier in the day, Central government decided to give Rs five lakh each to the next of kin of 3,325 victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots triggered after assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The compensation to the families of the anti-Sikh riot victims will be given in addition to what they have so far received from the government and other agencies from time to time.
