Leading the delegation, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken said that locals were badly affected by the polluting landfill site in Bhalaswa which emits smoke due to garbage burning and said that it needed to be closed down and planted with green saplings.
"Smouldering Bhalswa land fill has not only made the air in the area toxic and highly polluted, but the underground water in the area has also been contaminated."
"When the Master Plan of Delhi and the Zonal Plan were formulated, provision had been given to green the Bhalswa land fill site. But the Corporation has not taken any steps to green the area," he said.
The Bhalaswa landfill site started in 1993 was saturated many years ago. Spread over an area of around 21 acre, the landfill receives municipal solid waste from various parts of North Delhi.
Garbage burning leading to harmful emission of toxic smoke and protests by locals are frequently reported from the area.
