Delhi government is gearing up for the launch of the ambitious 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana', the scheme for financial inclusion announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his maiden Independence Day speech.
The scheme, under which the Centre intends to provide every household with a bank account and insurance cover, will be launched on August 28 by the Prime Minister.
Delhi government's Mission Director (Mission Convergence), Dr Madhu Teotia, said that Samajik Suvidha Sangam (SSS), through its 130 Gender Resource Centres (GRCs), would be coordinating with leading banks to facilitate the process of the opening of bank accounts for the scheme.
"For generating awareness about opening bank accounts for the people, GRC staff were trained about the necessary process," Teotia said.
The scheme will be launched nationwide amidst the prime minister's emphasis that it lies at the core of his government's development philosophy of "Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas".
As a first step, under the scheme, every account holder will get a 'RuPay' debit card along with a Rs 1 lakh accident cover.
Also, Teotia said that SSS, along with the Department of Food and Safety, is facilitating the work of online registration of small Food Business Operators (FBOs) under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
"So far, 4,327 applications of those FBOs who approached the GRCs have been submitted online," she said.
