Delhi govt gets notice for not giving assistance to juveniles
Press Trust of India New Delhi The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued a notice to Delhi Government over lack of legal assistance to juveniles in conflict with law.
"The Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report which cited that most juvenile inmates at Seva Kutir Juvenile Reform Home in Kingsway Camp, North Delhi have no access to legal assistance and many do not even know why they were lodged there.
"The contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of juveniles," the NHRC said in a statement said.
Notice has been issued to the Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, Delhi government and a report has been sought within two weeks.
Reportedly, the startling revelations about the helplessness of the juvenile were made in an audit report on their condition in the Home by the Delhi State Legal Services Authority, which is responsible for providing free legal aid counsel to those who cannot afford to hire private defense attorneys, the statement added.
