PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the government has decided to start relaying over 700 km of road length at the earliest.

"The government has decided to spend Rs 520 crore on strengthening the roads," he said.

Unhappy over the MCD's poor maintenance of roads, the government had, in December last year, decided to take over 674 streets with a total length of 802 km from it.

Officials said most of the roads will be re-laid and PWD will look after their maintenance. They said the contractors, after completion of re-laying work, will have to carry out their maintenance for a period of five years.

The total length of road network in the city is more than 31,000 km out of which MCD maintains around 27,000 km.
