In the light of a journalist's murder by rioters in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar and the large-scale retrenchment of mediapersons, Delhi Journalists Association today submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding laws for their safety and job security.
DJA organised a stir in support of their demands and condemned the arrest of two Zee News (Telugu) journalists in Hyderabad and the registration of an FIR against 'The Hindu's' resident editor in the same city.
"Journalists writing against the administration are being targeted. The government should appoint an inquiry commission to look into all such cases," DJA said.
It urged the PM to take measures for the protection of journalists working in adverse conditions, like areas hit by violence.
It also sought insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh for working journalists.
