Work in all six district courts in the national capital was affected today as the lawyers' body struck work to protest the baton charge on lawyers in Jaipur during their protest for better pay and registration of an FIR against 20 advocates in Chandigarh.
The co-ordination committee of All District Bar Association of Delhi, the umbrella organisation of Delhi lawyers, struck work to express solidarity with the "victimisation" of lawyers in Jaipur and Chandigarh by the police force and demanded strict action against the errant cops.
"The fraternity shall stand by the victimised lawyers in this need of time," Secretary General of Coordination Committee, Vinod Bhardwaj, said in a statement.
Work at Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Rohini, Karkardooma, Dwarka and Saket courts was slow and advocates did not argue their cases, which were put up for next date of hearing.
Yesterday, the lawyers in Jaipur were protesting outside Rajasthan Assembly demanding better pay and cheaper homes when they were allegedly baton charged by police and teargas shells lobbed. Nearly 30 lawyers were injured in the incident.
In Chandigarh, an FIR was registered against former additional advocate general, Punjab, Rupinder Singh Khosla and 19 other high court lawyers for allegedly thrashing a police constable on court premises.
The advocates are calling the FIR a "conspiracy".
