A man was arrested after more than 700 kilogram of banned fire crackers were seized from his shop in east Delhi, the police said on Tuesday.

Vijay Aggarwal (46), a resident of Radhey Shyam park in Geeta Colony owned a flour mill and had stocked the firecrackers inside his shop, they said.

He wanted to earn a quick buck by selling the illegal firecrackers ahead of Diwali, police said.

"Police received information about banned fire crackers being stocked and sold in a flour mill in Radhey Shyam Park, Jagatpuri. The team raided the premises where banned fire crackers were found in large quantity," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Amit Sharma said.

Aggarwal was arrested and booked under appropriate sections, he said.

He procured the fire crackers from different parts of western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the DCP said.

In 2018, just before Diwali, the Supreme Court had banned conventional firecrackers and ruled that only green crackers with reduced emission will be allowed to be manufactured and sold in the country in order to control the pollution level.
