With the arrest of two persons here, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a gang of drug traffickers which illegally supplied Codeine-based cough syrup for intoxication purpose.
The arrested have been identified as Ajay Kumar Tiwari and Jaswant Tiwari, both residents of Ambedkar Camp of Delhi, police said, adding, 15,606 bottles of codeine syrup worth Rs 1.20 crore have been seized from them.
"Codeine syrup was to be supplied to Kolkata and thereafter to North-Eastern states like Mizoram and other states. This syrup is sold in those areas at price eight to ten times more than its MRP.
"The demand for this syrup has been on the increase especially among youngsters," a senior police officer said.
The officer also said that one Anil, resident of Kolkata, bought the Codeine syrup, commonly known as "purple drink" among its users, from some unscrupulous sellers in Agra and Rajasthan and then supplied it to Kolkata via Delhi through railway parcels in connivance with Jaswanti.
"On April 24, police got a tip-off that Jaswant and Ajay would come along with an illegal consignment of Codeine syrup loaded in a Mahindra truck to go to railway parcel office via Novelty Cinema. Police laid a trap and arrested the duo from there," the officer said.
