"To enforce discipline among commercial transport vehicles and to ensure that they respect the "Right of Way" of other motorists, we had launched a concerted drive against these vehicles from April 18 on 11 selected corridors, like National Highways and major arterial roads," Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla said today.
Deployment of traffic staff at night hours has been augmented on these corridors to enforce observance of traffic discipline by the commercial transport vehicles, police said.
During the drive, a total of 47 cases have been registered under section 279 of IPC against the drivers of such vehicles for plying the vehicles recklessly during the night time, in a manner endangering human life on roads.
A total of 531 commercial transport vehicles have been impounded during night hours, which have been deposited in the traffic pits. The traffic courts are also imposing heavy penalties on the commercial transport vehicle drivers, police said.
Besides prosecution of commercial transport vehicle drivers, the prosecuting officers of traffic police are also simultaneously educating the violator drivers on rules and ethics pertaining to safe and defensive driving, police said.
"The aim of Delhi Police is to improve mobility and safety on roads of Delhi. This effort of enforcing discipline among commercial transport vehicles will continue," he said.
