Delhi Police should serve people with honesty: Chief

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi today exhorted his force to serve people with "honesty" and keep themselves away from arrogance and high handedness.
Bassi was speaking at a function, where the Delhi Police awarded 30 people, including eight women who braved criminals, risking their life to save others.
Bassi, who handed over a commendation roll and a memento to these bravehearts said, "This shows a spirit that whenever a human comes across something wrong, he or she steps in to make things right."
Appealing to the people to pull together with the forces in making Delhi a safer city, he said, "It is right that 80-85 thousand police personnel are not enough to secure the 1.80 crore people of Delhi. It would be enough when 1.80 crore people come together with us."

He asked his men to take lessons of honesty and self-abnegation from the good Samaritans who took on the criminals setting aside their self-interest.
"We need to increase integrity, whether it is dealing with a hawker or while managing traffic situation. We have to increase it (integrity) and learn from these people as we have to make do from the salary that we get," he said.

Among those awarded was a DTC bus driver, who confronted six robbers trying to hijack his bus and took the vehicle straight to the nearest police station and got them arrested.
The awardees included a girl who gave chase to two bikers who snatched her chain and caught them with public help. A homemaker took on four armed robbers, snatched a pistol from one of them and win-over them with the help of neighbours.

Bassi also advised his personnel to work with a sense of service and not with arrogance.
"Any police organization's main aim is to maintain peace in the society. And this should not be done with arrogance, high handedness or dishonesty. It should be done with a sense of service and our ultimate aim should be justice to the people," he said.
