People in their festive best turned up for special prayers at major mosques in the city, including historic Jama Masjid, Fathepuri Masjid and Hazrat Nizamuddin, as well as eidgahs in the city.
Soon after the 'namaz', people hugged each other and the mosques reverberated with greetings of "Eid Mubarak".
The narrow lanes near Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk were filled with the aroma of kebabs and bustled with revellers who were busy buying sweets and savouries to welcome friends and relatives.
Markets in the city have been decked up on the occasion as people bought new clothes, cosmetics, raw meat, and dry fruits among other stuff to mark the day.

People also gave alms to the needy who had gathered around the mosques and eidgahs.
Extensive security arrangements were in place across the country, especially where large congregations took place. Heavy police force were deployed around religious places to manage the crowd and ensure safety and security of devotees.
