A demand for a separate High Court for the newly-created Telangana state was raised in Rajya Sabha, prompting the government to say that the process will be expedited.
The issue was raised by TRS Keshava Rao who said every state must have a High Court of its own.
"Now every state must have a High Court of its own. So says the Act. Everybody agrees to it. But nothing has come out so far. The Minister had intervened two times on the floor of this House assuring us that they would give us a High Court," he said.
Rao said the new situation that has arisen is not because of a verdict "but because of the comments from the Chief Justice of the High Court four days back that the Act was not clear about the creation of separate High Court for Telangana and that the Act said only that there could be separate High Court for Andhra Pradesh".
He said the government should know that the Act itself provides for it.
"It says that the High Court will come into existence with the notification of the President. Let the government notify it. It is a serious issue," Rao added.
