Congress leader Ajay Maken today demanded Rs 50,000 compensation for the family of a 15-year-old girl who allegedly committed suicide here, claiming that it was due to demonetisation.
Maken, President of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, met the family of deceased Pooja and said the Centre and the Delhi government should give adequate compensation to the victim's kin.
"It was not the first incident in which one has to die due to demonetisation. Over 100 people have lost their lives due to the bad impact of demonetisation," he said.
The girl had allegedly committed suicide at her house in southwest Delhi's Mahavir Enclave on December 8 reportedly because she could not withdraw money to buy a new dress.
Her family members had said she had gone to withdraw cash from her mother's account at a nearby bank a few hours ago but returned empty handed.
Police, however, denied the family's allegations saying Pooja had demanded Rs 500 from her mother to buy a new dress but she refused. This might have led her to take the extreme step, police said.
