The protesters, who were led by former BJP MLA Chander Bhatia, also managed to have Market No 1 shut down, to register their opposition.

Bhatia had on Friday prevented civic authorities from carrying out demolitions at the shopping area and has even had a case lodged against him for obstructing government officials in the discharge of their duty.

However, police are yet to arrest the Bhatia who told reporters that although he respected the High Court order, the plight of small shopkeepers had prompted him to take up the protest.

Bhatia said that the current protest against the civic body's demolition drive would continue for another 10 days.

He alleged that civic officials were using the High Court order to demolish structures which had in fact obtained the necessary clearances while illegal buildings were being left alone.
