Two student unions of Jadavpur University on Friday demonstrated in the campus to press for their demand that students union elections, overdue for two years, be held at the earliest.

Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU) and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students Union (FETSU) demonstrated before the main administrative building, AFSU leader Debraj Debnath said.

No election to the university students' body had taken place in the past two years and said the authorities owed an explanation to the students on this issue, he said.

Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das had said last year that the university administration had no say in election to students union with the passage of Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Bill 2017,
On this, the AFSU leader said, "The VC had promised that there will be meeting with all stakeholders on the issue and communicate their views to the state government in a proper manner. We would like to know what is the progress on this issue."
JU Registrar Dr Snehamanju Basu said, "We have informed the students that the vice-chancellor will talk to them on the issue when he comes to the campus on Monday."
