Deora opposes changes to Rent Control Act
Press Trust of India Mumbai Former Union Minister Milind Deora today said the Maharashtra government should scrap the proposed amendment to the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999, because it would have disastrous consequences for lakhs of tenants staying under the 'paagdi' system.
Under the paagdi system of the past, a tenancy could be transferred (sold) to another person.
The former Congress MP said his party would stage a protest in the city on Sunday to demand that the government move from "tenancy regulation to (transfer of) ownership".
The BJP-led government has announced that it plans to charge the rent according to the market rates for residential tenants living in the tenements bigger than 847 square feet and commercial tenants occupying tenements bigger than 540 square feet under the paagdi system.
In a letter to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deora said, "It is indicated that the state government is moving towards adopting the draft Model Tenancy Act, 2015 prepared by the Union government. This would lead to mass dis-housing of tenants across the city of Mumbai and the state.
