In order to ensure safety of tourists, Union Tourism Ministry has advised all state governments and Union Territory administrations to deploy Tourist Police.
The governments of Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have deployed Tourist Police in one form or the other, according to Tourism Ministry.
Though prevention of crime, including crime against tourists, is the primary responsibility of state governments, the Ministry is concerned over the negative impact of crime on tourism.
Funds have been given under the Central Financial Assistance to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh for setting up of Tourist Facilitation and Security Organisation on a pilot basis.
Guidelines for adoption of code of conduct for safe and honorable tourism have been issued to hotels, guides, tour operators and other professionals and institutions involved with tourism, said the official.
Letters have been written to all Chief Ministers of states and Union Territories to take immediate effective steps for ensuring conducive and friendly environment for all tourists and also to request them to publicize the steps being taken to increase the sense of security among prospective visitors and also to counter the negative publicity.
