: The Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner (DC) A B Ibrahim has opposed any move of the state government to change the name of the district.
In a letter to Revenue Principal Secretary,he said it was "absolutely inappropriate" to change the name of the Dakshina Kannada (DK) district to Mangalore, official sources said.
The letter is in the wake of recent reported proposals aimed at changing the names of certain districts, including Dakshina Kannada.
He said the people of DK district had developed an emotional bond with the existing name.Any initiative to rename the district was a sensitive and emotional issue and should be decided with caution. Majority of people in the district were against a change of name.
During British rule this district which came under Madras Presidency was known as South Kanara. This name was later changed into Dakshina Kannada. The name 'Kanara' has both historic and heritage value, he noted in the letter.
The district with Mangalore as its headquarters has had the unique distinction of being the confluence of several languages, faiths and cultures. People here speak various languages, including Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Byari, Bhovi, Malayalam, and Marathi. Mangalore had always been referred to as Kudla in Tulu, Kodiala in Konkani, Maikala in Byari, Mangalapuram in Sanskrit and Malayalam and Mangalore in English, the letter said.
