Descendants of George Uglow Pope, popularly known as G U Pope, who translated Thirukkural, a Tamil classic written by Saint-Poet Thiruvaluvar, into English, are planning to document his life history.
As part of their effort, his great grand daughter Carol Burroughs and her three children are on tour of India, particularly Bengaluru and Udhagamandalam, where Pope had spent his major part of life for nearly 40 years.
The family visited Bishop Cottons School in Bengaluru, where Pope was head as well as the warden and collected various photographs and other documents, Derek Burrough, a family member, said.
Similarly, they are here to visit and document the places where he stayed and worked, like a lecturer in an arts college.
Pope, who died in England in 1908, was the founder of Holy Trinity Church here and also stayed at the Stone House, an ancient building.
He had released the English translations of Thirukkural in 1886 and Thiruvasagam, a Tamil classic, in 1900.
