With an aim to spread
awareness among masses about designs, the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), has identified 12 locations in and around the city to develop landmarks with architectural designs.
As part of its theme, "Taking design to masses," the local chapter of IIID is holding talks with the City Corporation and other organisations, especially those involved in construction, to create awareness about designs, by erecting landmarks across the city, its Secretary, Manimaran told reporters yesterday on the sidelines of Design Yatra, which arrived here.
To start with, the chapter will take a traffic island in RS Puram to create a land mark, which will have a sculpture as a symbol of Coimbatore, so that the common man learn on the importance of design, he said.
The design yatra, which was flagged off on February 21 from Indore, to create awareness about the design, reached here after covering 15,000 Kms and 21 locations across the country and cover another seven centres in another few days.
Earlier, addressing the yatra, IIID National Secretary, Jabeen L Zacharias said IIID has evolved the theme to take the designs to masses, which was hitherto solely for classes.

Meanwhile, in her speech, Executive Trustee of Siruthuli, an NGO, Vanitha Mohan, said it was working towards creating ghats, for performing last rites or special poojas at a famous Shiva Temple in the city.
The project is awaiting the clearance from the authorities and designers and once finished it would become a symbol for Coimbatore, she said.
