Coming to the rescue of a woman who alleged that her husband was being detained by a corporate hospital demanding huge sums of money over and above what was already paid for surgery, the Madras High Court today issued notices to the hospital and the city police.
The court issued the notices after hearing a Habeas Corpus petition filed by Meenal Singh, wife of Ajay Singh hailing from Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to the petitioner, her husband had approached the corporate hospital on the city outskirts for consultation onJune 18.
He was diagnosed to have a serious liver ailment, advised to undergo liver transplant at the earliest and was admitted to the hospital.
After payment of Rs 33 lakh, surgery was done and he recovered. She alleged that the hospital then demanded an extra amount of Rs 39.11 lakh over and above what was already paid.
She alleged that the hospital authorities apprised her that her husband would be discharged only after paying the extra amount demanded by them.
Also, no action was taken by the police on her compliant in this regard, she claimed.
The court posted the matter for further hearing to November 18.
