The government understands the "really very serious" issue, Health Minister J P Nadda said in Rajya Sabha after members voiced concern over the menace.
He said the government was determined to take steps for better equipping the laboratories and train the food inspectors.
"Some changes are required to be made in the rules," he added.
The issue of growing menace of food adulteration was raised by Naresh Agrawal (SP) during Zero Hour to which members from both treasury and opposition benches associated with.
To that end, the government must bring in stringent rules and if required, existing laws must be reviewed, he said.
