"Development is necessary for the rapidly changing economy. But the government doesn't favour development at the cost of environment," Das said after planting seedlings in the under construction legislative assembly premises.
"The government is committed to protect and promote environment. In the last two sessions, the government has done massive tree plantation and tried to connect common people with this campaign. Now the positive side of this drive is getting visible. The government believes in the promotion of culture around forests," he said.
Asking workers to plant trees in the new legislative assembly, Das said the premises will remember them for years. This will be the best legislative assembly favouring greenery, he added.
Das said that the 2019 budget should be introduced in the new legislative assembly. The contractor and workers will be awarded if the building is made before time. The government is rehabilitating the people who have given their land for this premise with the expenditure of Rs 245 crore.
Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Minister Saryu Rai said that apart from forestation drive, the forest has to be protected from being felled.
