The Devi Ahilya University, for the first time since it was established in 1964, asked participants, including dignitaries present, to wear traditional Indian attire for its convocation ceremony, university authorities said.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, Vice Chancellor Narendra Dhakad, along with graduating students, were present at the ceremony today wearing clothes that included a turban native to the Malwa region and a jacket and stole.

An official said that the move was to encourage Indianness, adding that the state government had also issued directives that traditional attire should be adopted for these ceremonies instead of the current practice of wearing convocation or graduation gowns and caps.
