Braving an early morning chill, devotees, including women and children, began converging at the famous ghat to take the ritual bath in the mighty river to mark the occasion.
They also worshipped Tulsi and offered alms to the poor, SSP Arun Joshi said.
Tight security arrangements had been made along the banks to ensure law and order, he said adding over 10 lakh people took dip in the river on the occasion.
Bathing in the Ganga on Kartik Poornima holds great significance for Hindus who believe it rids them of their negativity besides showering them with the blessings of Lord Shiva.
