The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in collaboration with AIIMS is in the process of framing guidelines to train more doctors in the country, especially in far-fetched areas .
"There is a gross mismatch between the number of neurosurgeons in the country and the actual patient population of head trauma.
"Our country has got approximately 1500-1600 neurosurgeons and we see so high population of neurotrauma patients coming everyday. So we need to produce more doctors who can look after the head trauma specially in far-off areas," said B S Sharma, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at AIIMS.
Doctors from various parts of the country will be identified and recruited to undergo a rigorous training for a minimum of six months upto one month and they will be taught how to do basic head injury surgeries, Sharma said.
"The idea is that if there is some emergency in far-flung areas they can save lives before transporting the patients back to the neurosurgeons," he said, adding, by January end next year, these guidelines will come in the blueprint.
