A 55-year-old Mumbai-based diamond merchant and his associate were robbed of jewellery worth about Rs 1 crore by two armed bike-borne miscreants on Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, police said today.
Police said that jewellery made of precious stones and gold was last night snatched by the robbers who waylaid diamond merchant Satish Kumar Shah's vehicle at around 8:45 P.M. Near Liberty Cinema.
"Shah was returning after meeting a businessman in Pitampura and was headed to a hotel in Karol Bagh with his associate Anand Rajpura," said a senior police officer.
When they reached Liberty Cinema, the bike-borne duo intercepted the car and pointing a gun at Shah, asked him to hand over the bag containing the jewellery. When Shah refused, they smashed the car's windowpanes and snatched the bag before fleeing the spot.
Shah immediately informed police and told them that among the robbed items were gold bangles, diamond rings and earrings and mangalsutras.
Shah takes orders for jewellery items in Delhi and gets them made at his diamond showroom in Mumbai.
"The victim had arrived in Delhi on a flight along with Rajpura on Tuesday. As always during his visits to Delhi, he hired a car and visited Chandni Chowk to buy jewellery and meet some jewellers.
"On Wednesday, he met some jewellers in the Moti Nagar and Pitampura areas," police said, adding that they suspect an insider's role in the robbery.
