At a time when Delhi is supposed to be on a high-alert following a terror strike threat, a 31-year-old differently-abled man allegedly committed suicide just a few hundred metres away from India Gate in the heart of the national capital.
The body of the man identified as Sheshnath (31) was found hanging from a tree with his legs in pond water at the India Gate lawns at around 7:00 AM here this morning. The incident came to light when the body was spotted by passersby who then informed police.
It is suspected that Sheshnath committed suicide last night. The incident raised questions over police patrolling in the high-security zone.
He was identified by an identity card found on him. He seems to be partially handicapped. The body has been sent for postmortem which would reveal the exact time of death.
"We have recovered a suicide note from him where he mentions that he was having an affair with a girl and something had gone wrong in the relationship. He was disturbed over this which prompted him to take the extreme step," DCP (New Delhi) Vijay Singh.
He lived with his family in West Delhi's Nangloi area. They have been informed about the incident, he added.
Police is questioning his family and friends to zero in on the exact circumstances which led him to take the extreme step.
Security has been beefed up in the national capital as Delhi Police was alerted about a possible 'fidayeen' suicide strike in the city by banned Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror group after central security agencies had recovered a note from one of the militants killed in Samba attack in Jammu and Kashmir last month.
