DIG (Saharanpur) S K Mathur landed in a controversy when he told a man who had come to lodge a missing complaint about his sister that had he been in his place, he would have shot her.
"I believe something like this coming from the police is wrong.... I demand that the state government suspend him and then investigate why he gave such a response," NCW Chairperson Mamata Sharma said.
The DIG has turned away from his duties, she said, adding it is his responsibility that if a person comes to him for help, he has to help them.
"The response that he gave was cowardly...This is unfortunate. He is shying away from his responsibility," Sharma said.
Additional Director of Police (Law and Order) Jagmohan Yadav told reporters in Lucknow that Mathur has denied having made the remarks yesterday.
Yadav said, "If such a thing has been said, then further action will be taken," noting that it was a serious issue in the wake of honour killing incidents in the area.
