The Congress General Secretary's remarks came a day after the BJP MP, addressing a 'sant samagam' called by Dharm Jagran Manch of the RSS in Vaishali, made a strong pitch for the 'ghar wapsi' campaign of the RSS and its affiliates, asking the government not to stop the 'forcibly converted' Hindus from becoming Hindu again.
"There is nothing wrong in 'ghar vapasi' if one does it out of free will. Is it not a fact that largescale conversion of Hindus into other religions had taken place before and after Independence due to allurement and pressure?" he had said.
The MP from Gorakhpur had described those opposing 'homecoming' of non-Hindus as 'pseudo-seculars' and asked them to explain their stand "on the conversion of Hindus into other faiths in the Northeast".
"Those opposing 'homecoming' of non-Hindus should first oppose conversion of Hindus into other faiths in the Northeast," he had demanded.
The speech of BJP leader, who had run a 'love-jihad' in Uttar Pradesh before the assembly by-polls there, comes after recent controversies sparked by remarks made by Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti and BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj.
Both Sadhvi and Maharaj had to apologise in Parliament for their controversial remark.
Elections in Bihar are scheduled next year, where the BJP after a landslide victory in Lok Sabha polls, faced defeat in the assembly by-polls this year by the combined might of Nitish Kumar's JD-U and Lalu Prasad's RJD also backed by Congress.
JD-U and RJD are on the merger path and believe that their combined vote share will pose a tough challenge to the the BJP.
