Dikshit asks police to instill sense of security among women

At a meeting convened by the Chief Minister, representatives of various organisations, including the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), requested Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar to take visible steps to improve the law and order situation.

Dikshit also visited the Safdarjung Hospital to inquire about the condition of the victim of the rape and brutal assualt by six men in a moving bus here on Sunday.

In the meeting, Dikshit said that her government will take all possible measures including regulating vehicles, improving safety in public transport and carrying out public awareness campaigns to ensure the security of women, children and the elderly in the city. "A plan will be sorted out by taking views from the various organisations," she said.

Dikshit said that there should be no compromise made in providing security to women in Delhi and suggested that the civil defence personnel, schools and other organisations should be involved to put in place a mechanism to ensure better security environment.

The Delhi Police Commissioner said his department will be taking a multi-agency approach to deal with such cases in future. "The approach will be such that everyone including the DCW, social activists, NGOs and other agencies will be working together," Kumar said.

During the meeting, DCW Chairperson Barkha Singh suggested that more CCTV cameras should be installed in key places and there should be a background check made for every driver or conductor driving a bus in the city.

A representative of the Delhi University present during the meeting demanded specific actions to ensure the safety of women in the capital.

The Chief Minister also asked the Police Commissioner to ensure that proper verification of drivers and conductors are made, before issuing a no-objection certificate to them.

The meeting was convened this evening after the Delhi Government and the Delhi Police came under fire from various protest groups, who blamed them for the increase in the number of cases of sexual assault in the city.
