Dikshit sops for students, residents of unauthorised colonies

Trying to woo people ahead of the assembly polls, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today rolled out a number of sops for students, residents of unauthorised colonies and labourers among others, besides announcing various infrastructure projects.
After a Cabinet meeting, perhaps the last before the November assembly polls, she made a series of announcements including government's decision to slash charges for sewer development by residents of nearly 300 unauthorised colonies.
The unauthorised colonies are considered traditional votebanks of Congress.
According to the Cabinet decision, the plot holders up to 100 square yards would be charged Rs 5000 for sewer connection instead of existing rate of Rs 41,000.

Those having plots measuring 101 to 250 square yards will have to pay only Rs 10,000 instead of nearly Rs one lakh while people having plot size between 251 sq yards and 500 sq yards will have to pay Rs 20,000, said Dikshit, terming it as a major relief provided by her government.
Education Minister A K Walia said government has decided to recommend to the Centre to provide 90 per cent reservation to students from the city for admission in 12 colleges funded by it, a move seen as an effort to woo the youngsters.

He said Delhi government provides 100 per cent funding to the 12 colleges where it plans to reserve 90 per cent seats for students from Delhi.

The government has also decided to reserve 50 per cent seats in colleges which are being given 50 per cent grant for under capital head.
Dikshit announced that Delhi government has increased the minimum wages for the skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled and the new rates have come into effect from today.
