"We have so many good stadiums. But the difficulty is that Government of India kept a very high rate for practicing in these stadia because of which it is virtually difficult for our athletes to practice in these facilities," Dikshit said.
She was replying to question whether there was a need to further enhance sports infrastructure in the city to encourage young talents to follow the footsteps of wrestler Sushil Kumar who created history by winning a silver medal in London Olympics.
Most of stadia like Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Shivaji stadium, Indira Gandhi indoor stadium, Dhyan Chand stadium are under Sports Authority of India which functions under administrative control of Union Sports Ministry.
"The cost of practice in Chhatrasal and Ludo Castle stadia which are under Delhi Government is very low. We request the Government of India to slash the rates in their stadia so that sports persons can use them," Dikshit said.
Dikshit yesterday had announced a reward of Rs one crore for Kumar for winning the silver medal in Wrestling in London Olympics.
"We are proud that out of two medals the country won in Olympics, one has been won by a sportsperson from Delhi," Dikshit said after a Cabinet meeting which also passed a resolution congratulating Kumar.
Kumar recorded his name in the country's sports history annals by becoming the first sportsperson to win back-to- back individual Olympic medals, having won a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games.
