Labelling Bengali comedy-thriller 'Obhisopto Nighty' a spoof on society, 'Hate Story' female lead Paoli Dam says friend-director Birsa Dasgupta never meddled in her acting and gave her free space.
"Whatever I did during shoots, Birsa accepted. And he gave me the full liberty to work on my scenes. He never interefered," Paoli, referred as 'Smita Patil in Begal' for her acting prowess and dusky demeanour, told PTI.
"I will call it a spoof, a satire on the hilarious concealed wishes," she said at the premier when asked to define the film's tagline.
Naukadubi and Jaatiswar actor Jisshu Sengupta, having been picked up for a big ticket Bollywood project opposite Rani Mukherjee, said "The best way to describe Obhispoty Nighty is it is a Pulp Fiction."
"There has to be a time for everything. I believe the time has come for such whacky, witty, films with the advent of directors like Birsa, Mainak (Bhowmik) and Srijit (Mukherjee)," one of the film's leads Parambrata Chatterjee said.
Birsa's friend-popular director Raj Chakraborty said "It is a rocking fun-filled entertainer. It bears the typical Birsa touch in every frame. I enjoyed it thoroughly."
Actor Sujan Neel Mukherjee, part of the cast, said "It is a black comedy. But my role as a Censor Board member does not draw any real life references."
Tollywood hero Soham said, "It is a satire and the spoof on 80 and 90s chartbusters show how arthouse and masala genres are merging now in present day Bengali film industry, the same way Raj and Birsa appreciate each other's cinema. We are all one big family.
Q's 'Taser Desh' actor Rii said approvingly, "It is a very unique and unconventional film."
Obhispoto Nighty, produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, should have been released in a seedy place like "Prodip Cinema' as it talks about 'Nighty'', object of Bengali male's fantasy, part of film's cast and tv anchor-funnyman Mir said in jest.
"Seriously speaking this is a very different genre of cinema where the director unmasks the hidden self of the coy Bengalee middle class blending real and fantasy elements," he commented.
"People acclaimed my first film, but since it was made before Srijit's Autograph perhaps the audience was not ready in those days. Now let's see," Birsa said about his first festival-feted film 033.
