In order to strengthen the capabilities of Nepal's disaster response forces, India's elite NDRF is conducting a first-ever training session for a squad of chosen police officials of the neighbouring country in such tasks.
The ten officials of Nepal, which saw a tragic earthquake in April this year killing thousands, are being trained in medical response, collapsed structure search and rescue, and combating chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear emergencies by the trainers of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The NDRF is the central force of the country to respond to such emergency incidents with a country-wide reach.
"The effort is to enhance the capabilities of the Nepalese forces while responding to any disaster-like challenges. A group of ten officials are being trained at the forces' camp in Ghaziabad for a period of two weeks," NDRF Director General O P Singh told PTI.
The trainees are led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police Rank official followed by an Inspector and Sub-Inspectors who are involved in disaster response in Nepal as part of their duties.
The NDRF will also be giving the police officials practical training on various equipments, tools and accessories which are used to combat the aftermath of disasters, either man-made or natural.
Special sessions on urban search and rescue and trauma management will also be held for the officials of the Himalayan nation as part of the maiden course hosted for Nepal by India in this domain.
The fourteen-day training would end on December 18.
The NDRF had also recently spearheaded the conduct of the first-ever South Asian Annual Disaster Management Exercise (SAADMEx) in the national capital region for SAARC nations to test and share their capabilities amongst each other.
