"I met AICC President Sonia Gandhi and thanked her for giving him the new role in the party. I will strive to strengthen the party to counter BJP in 2018 Assembly polls," Rao told reporters here.
The 46-year-old Congress leader, son of former Karnataka chief minister late Gundu Rao, said he would focus on improving the coordination between the government and the party.
On resignation of Ambareesh and threats from several "like-minded" legislators to quit, Rao said, "There is discontent among some MLAs. But these are temporary set backs. The issue of dissent will be addressed by the CM."
Rao also said he would tour the state in the next six months to focus on the government's "good work at the ground level and identify hardworking and loyal workers to win the next Assembly election".
He was also dropped as Food and Civil Supplies Minister in the Sunday reshuffle. Rao is a three-time MLA and has been a national spokesperson of the party.
