The Madras High Court was informed today by the Kancheepuram District Collector that out of the about 12 hectares of land poromboke land, encroached by the SRM University, nearly 5.5 hectors were completely removed.
The iron wire fencing laid by the university in the land classified as Thulukanathamman Temple poromboke were removed completely. Temporary residential/houses constructed by the university in the poromboke were also removed, District Collector R Gajalakshmi sybmitted.
However, still there were some encroachments in the nature of road and a concrete compound wall in the poromboke land and notice was issued to the university to remove it.
The affidavit was submitted in the court on a PIL by one Sathish Kumar alleging SRM University had encroached the government property worth about Rs 300 crores.
"We have perused the counter affidavit and we are satisfied that at last action against the encroachments has been taken. Some actions have been completed, while other actions are in progress. We are thus of the view that the only direction that is to be made is for the authority to complete the action against encroachment, whether it be SRM University or others as is apparent from the affidavit filed by the Collector," the court said.
Disposing the PIL, the bench posted toJanuary 20for filing compliance report.
