Diwali, the festival of lights, was celebrated across West Bengal today with bursting of crackers, illumination of houses and exchange of sweets among families and friends.
People in large numbers were seen visiting Kali Puja pandals which were decorated with dazzling lights, Kali Puja being observed since last evening.
Devotees thronged Kali temples, including the famous ones at Kalighat, Dakshineswar and Tarapith.
Large crowds were also seen before major community Kali Puja pandals in the central and northern parts of the city as well as at Barasat, Madhyamgram and Naihati in North 24-Parganas district, where it is celebrated with great fervour.
The police and fire brigade personnel across the city kept a vigilant eye on the festive proceedings and sale of banned firecrackers.
From special control rooms, which were set up both by the state and city police, a strict vigil was kept to avert any untoward incident during the celebration.
